Information on the village of Saint-Véran:
Up at an altitude of 2042 meters, Saint-Véran, is also known as “Europe highest village”. His weather is the same as everywhere else in this region: dry and sunny. Nowadays, some thirty children keep the two classes of the primary school busy and the future of the 290 souls living in this place all year long obviously depends on tourism. It is quite obvious the cultural and pastoral activities have lost some of their importance but they make it possible to keep all the sides of rural locality where man craft lives at its best. A unique settlement in Europe.

The constructions of Saint-Véran go way back to the middle age when people had to start adapting to the living conditions of high-mountains and are unique examples of mountain houses. The basement is made of thick stone walls. The upper part called “fuste” is made of piled trees trunk crossed in the angles. It was used to dry and store the forage to feed the beasts during the long months of winter. This building is linked to a smaller one made of stone called the “Caset”.

The country of sundials:
In Saint-Véran, you can discover over twenty sundials, some coming from the Renaissance, some more modern but all of them made of an incredible architectural richness. A piemontais artist made the most famous ones between 1840 and 1845: Giovanni Francesco Zarbula. Your guide will make you discover all the richness of this village during a guided tour.
