A crossing of the Pyrenees, leaving from France and going into Spain, a discovery of the beauty and diversity of the Basque Country, Navarre and La Rioja... From the old fortified town of St Jean Pied de Port, to Logroño, capital of La Rioja, passing sites, cities and villages full of interest and rich in culture: Roncesveaux, Pamplona, Puente la Reina, Estella ...

This Jacobite part of the route is a discovery of the wide diversity of Navarre and La Rioja, as well as a beautiful north-south crossing of the Pyrenees. A route with varied landscapes and rich culture. At the border crossing, in a landscape of breathtaking natural beauty, you can imagine the emotion that touched the pilgrims coming from France and other parts of Europe. Finally they had arrived in Spain and reached the last long and beautiful "straight line" that led to Santiago de Compostela.

Day 01 : ST JEAN PIED DE PORT

Arrival at St Jean Pied de Port, famous fortified city.

 

Day 02 : ST JEAN PIED DE PORT - RONCESVALLES

Long day with one of the most difficult steps. You will get across the  Roncevaux (or Ibañeta) Pass and arrive at Roncesvalles (biggest hospice of the Pyrenees with famous cloister).

Walk 7h; 26 km

 

Day 03 : RONCEVALLES - ZUBIRI

Hike in the forest and along a lot of small villages with typical houses. A beautiful discovery of Navarre's landscapes between Roncesvalles and Zubiri "the village of the bridge".

6h, 22 km

 

Day 04 : ZUBIRI - PAMPLONA

Beautiful hike that will get you to Pamplona (Navarre's "capital") and its pilgrimmage vestiges. You will also have the possibility to visit its cathedral, cloister, and the old city.

 5h30 ; 21 km

 

Day 05 : PAMPLONA - PUENTE LA REINA

You will get trough the Sierra del Perdon with some amazing views. 

Night in the medieval city of Puente La Reina, where the  "Camino Frances" starts.

Day 06 : PUENTE LA REINA - ESTELLA

You will get to see a lot of small villages with rich a strong heritage : Mañeru, Cirauqui, Villatuerta... Then, you will arrive to Estella, la Vers Estella, la « Tolède du Nord », with its beautiful villages, houses and churches.

Day 07 : ESTELLA - LOS ARCOS

After Estella, you will get to Irache and its Xth century monastery and its famous fountain of wine.

End of the day at Los Arcos, historic town rich in "battles and wines"  Santa Maria's church.

Day 08 : LOS ARCOS - LOGRONO

Arrival at Logroño, town really interesting with its beautiful cathedral and its old district.  You are now in the heart of Rioja province, famous for its delicious wines.

End of the hike

THE AREA
The walks take place often in sensitive natural areas and, as such activity must comply with the environment: respect for the natural heritage, respect for cultural heritage and people, respect for natural resources (water, soil, habitats, fauna, flora, climate) and fight against pollution and any environmental impact: it should not disturb the animals nor damage flowers !
Life in Spain,
You will go into Spain during the trip. It is advisable to speak a little Spanish to enjoy the experience better, without having to learn perfectly the language of Cervantes. A small dictionary English / Spanish is useful. The currency is the Euro.
Remember also that the Spanish eating habits are sometimes quite different from English.

TO GET TO THE MEETING POINT

Our tours are specially designed to go from station to station, one incentive to use the means of transport which pollutes less.

By train : Train to Bayonne, then local SNCF railway line (by SNCF bus : approximately 1:20) to St Jean Pied de Port. For more information on fares and train schedules, visit the website of SNCF: www.voyages-sncf.com

 

By car : From your home to Bayonne or Pau then on the motorway A64 between Pau and Bayonne, exit 7 at Salies and then take the D430, D933, Sauveterre de Béarn, D933 St Palais, D933 St Jean Pied de Port, Michelin Map No. 85.

 

By Aeroplane : Airport Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne and regional SNCF railway line to St Jean Pied de Port.

 

For those beginning the journey of Pamplona :

By train : Train from Irun (journey time: about 2 hours, 2 daily departures). The RENFE train station is quite far from the town centre, the best solution is to take a taxi.

 

By bus : The company La Burundesa covers the route Irun - Pamplona (about 2 hours and one trip per day).

 

By Aeroplane: Pamplona airport is 8 km from the city centre. The only way to get from the airport in Pamplona is to take a taxi (about 15 euros).

At arrival in Logroño.

 

By train : Several trains from Logroño to Paris Austerlitz (Renfe and SNCF)

By bus : The company La Estellesa provides travel from Logroño - San Sebastian or Irun (journey time: about 2 hours). www.laestellesa.com The company ALSA provides also travel to several cities. http://www.alsa.es/en/

 

By car : You have two options:

- Option 1: Economic but tedious: leave Logroño by train, change at Miranda de Ebro, change at Hendaye, change at Bayonne, arriving at St Jean Pied de Port.

- Option 2: More expensive but easier: Take regular bus to Pamplona from Logroño (La Estellesa) then taxi to St. Jean Pied de Port (book in advance).

 

For those wishing to return to Pamplona

By train: Train from Pamplona to Irun (2 hours) or to other cities.

By bus: The Company La Burundesa / La Union provides travel Pamplona - Irun (1 trip per day) and other cities.

The Company Edsa provides travel from Pamplona to Hendaye and Bayonne (end of june to the beginning of Sepember). The Company ALSA provides travels to several cities in France and Spain.

The schedule of trains and buses are subject to change during the year depending on the day of the week, we invite you to contact the various public transport operators to plan your journey to the meeting point and back.

 

IF YOU WANT TO ARRIVE THE NIGHT BEFORE OR STAY AFTER THE TRIP

We can book an extra night at the same hotel before the program (upon request and with supplement, please contact us)

This trip is in France and Spain. Depending on your nationality you'll need a visa or not. If you have any doubts, please check this longtime in advance by the consulates or embassies.

Before leaving, consider the possibility of having to pay medical expenses abroad.

You can apply to the social services for a European card, and this will save you having to pay in advance for any medical expenses abroad which remain, whatever happens, at your expense. Please bring your ID or passport.

6 to 8 hours walking per day, without difficulty, elevations of about 300 m per day. (except Day 2: 1300 m climb, but not much descent). All trails are marked : GR (white and red) and/or the sign of a shell.

1 night in hotel ***, 5 nights in hotel **, 1 night in guest house. Bath or shower and WC in the room.

MEALS

Dinners and breakfasts are usually taken in the restaurants of your accommodation. Lunches are not included in the price. You can make your own picnic or order them the day ahead with the accommodation (paid locally). There are many cheap supply points along the way.

Your luggage is transported by us unless you choose a program without luggage

transportation.

We will send you a travel guide containing all the documents necessary for the completion of your trip: guidebook with maps, luggage labels, including logistic informations, accommodation addresses, and so on. You will find a description of the paths (the entire route is signposted) and comments on the villages, monuments etc ...

Luggage tags : Please put your name on the tag + the name we've used (the "group leader's name") to do the bookings by the accommodations.

If we are not sure you'll receive the documents by ordinary post in time we'll send them to the first accommodation.In that case we'll send to you by Email the accomodation list.

LUGGAGE

- a soft travel bag, avoid suitcases, which are more cumbersome and limit the weight of your belongings to 10 kg. - a small backpack of about 35 litres for you daytime requirements.

CLOTHES

- a waterproof and breathable jacket (Gore-Tex type)

- a fleece or a sweater

- a raincoat (poncho)

- walking trousers

- 1 pair of gloves

- 1 hat

- shorts

- a bathing suit + towel

- several pairs of socks (not too large)

- underwear

- 1 pair of trainers

- a tracksuit or loose clothing for the evening

EQUIPMENT TO BRING

- 1 pair of walking shoes that have been used before

- sunglasses, sunscreen and lip protection

- a hat

- 1 bottle (allow 2 to 3 litres per person per day in summer)

- a Tupperware type plastic bowl for the picnic + cutlery

- your identification documents

- and why not a camera and a novel.

FIRST AID KIT

- a small personal kit(gauze, Elastoplast, analgesic, double skin for blisters, earplugs ...).
